How to measure furniture & prep for delivery

First, identify where you want your new piece to live. To visualize how it will fit, refer to the dimensions on the product page and map out the area with painter’s tape. Make sure to consider the full scale, including the overall width (W), depth (D) and height (H), and diagonal depth (DD)—for chairs and sofas.

Double check the space

Once you’ve determined the location for your new indoor or outdoor furniture piece, consider the surroundings.

• Check for electrical outlets, vents, or light switches that could be obstructed.
• PRO TIP: Give yourself an extra 1–2 inches of wiggle room when taking measurements.

Doorways

Determine the best pathway from outside your home into where the piece will live, noting any obstacles like building access.

• Measure the height (H), width (W) and diagonal (D) of all doorways along the path.
• Compare measurements to determine if the furniture can go straight through entryways, or if it must be angled or turned on its end.
• For sofas and chairs, the width of the entryway must exceed one of the following: the piece’s depth, diagonal depth or height.

Hallways

Measure the height and width of every hallway your item will pass through.

• Consider wall and ceiling fixtures and decorative moldings.
• If there are narrow entryways and corners, measure the total clearance length (C) between the outside hallway wall and interior room walls. This is important for sofas or tall bookcases that must be moved in horizontally.

Stairways

If your piece must travel up or down a staircase, measure each segment carefully.

• Take handrails and banisters into account when measuring width.
• Measure the ceiling height from the bottom step and top step.
• If there’s a landing, measure its width and depth, as well as the ceiling height from that spot.
• Measure the diagonal from the steps and landing, in case you need to tilt the item to clear the stairway.

Elevators

If your building has an elevator, take care to measure every angle, from the door opening to the interior height, width, depth and diagonals.

Preparing for delivery

To ensure a smooth arrival, clear a path for your new furniture, moving any existing furniture out of the way. Protect your floors and anything else that could be damaged.
